What It Is

Cooper Complete® 5 mg Prolonged Release Melatonin Supplement is a formula with a two-phased delivery system that releases melatonin quickly and then steadily over six hours to support healthy sleep throughout the night.†

How to Use:

As a dietary supplement, take one (1) tablet with water 20 minutes before bedtime or as directed by your health care professional. Each bottle contains 90 servings.

How It Helps

Naturally produced in the pineal gland in response to changes in light exposure, melatonin helps promote healthy sleep patterns and supports antioxidant and immune functions.† At night or in the dark, the body’s melatonin production rises, but the amount produced declines from adolescence until it is virtually absent in elderly adults.  This 5 mg Melatonin Prolonged Release Supplement is recommended for adults who have difficulty with sleep†. Specifically designed for those who experience interrupted sleep, this extended-release melatonin supplement releases 5 mg of melatonin over six hours†.

The leading cause of fatigue is poor sleep. Sleep quantity and quality are to blame for most cases of fatigue. A joint consensus statement of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and Sleep Research Society published in 2015 recommends that adults regularly sleep seven or more hours per night to promote optimal health. In reality, most American adults get between five and six hours of sleep per night, and some get even less. The amount of time you sleep at night is extremely important for feeling well-rested. Regularly sleeping fewer than seven hours per night is associated with many adverse health outcomes.

Lack of Sleep and Potential Negative Health Outcomes

Lack of sleep has been associated with various health outcomes, including:

  • Weight gain and obesity
  • Diabetes
  • High blood pressure (hypertension)
  • Heart disease
  • Stroke
  • Depression
  • Impaired immune function
  • Increased pain
  • Impaired performance
  • Increased errors
  • Great accident risk
  • Increased risk of death

In several human studies, researchers have found that melatonin supplementation reduces the number of days needed to establish a regular sleep pattern†. Travelers took melatonin on the day of travel (close to the target bedtime of the destination) and several days after that. Examining several studies on the impact of melatonin and jet lag, melatonin appeared to provide benefits for approximately half of the people studied.†

As a dietary supplement, adults take one (1) Melatonin Prolonged Release tablet 20 minutes before bedtime, or as directed by their physician or health care professional.

Reviews of 5 mg Melatonin Prolonged Release Supplement

  1. Sleep is a rare commodity for me. So I was excited to try this. However, I’m still not staying asleep, despite exercise.

    • Thank you for your comments. Many factors affect our quality of sleep. As you noticed, regular exercise has been shown to improve sleep quality as long as it is not done within 1 hour of bedtime. Tobacco, caffeine, alcohol, and heavy meals prior to bedtime can interfere with a good night’s sleep. As can exposure to blue light from cell phones, computers, tablets, etc. Read about sleep hygiene tips here. Your physician or sleep medicine physician can develop a treatment plan to get better sleep

  2. I did not like this product. Extremely groggy and out of it the next day. Please try making a 1.5 mg dose for sensitive people. I will not be buying the 3 mg dose again.

13 Questions
Ask a Question
Q:

How long before bed should you take Prolonged Release Melatonin?

A:

Prolonged Release Melatonin features a two-phase release, releasing some quickly and then steadily over 6 hours.

Melatonin isn’t a sedative — it’s a chronobiotic, meaning it signals to the body that it’s time to start winding down. It works with your circadian rhythm†, so timing is key. Taking it earlier gives your body time to recognize the signal and begin releasing its own sleep-promoting compounds.

Studies suggest that taking melatonin 1–2 hours before bedtime can help ease the process of falling asleep† and support overall sleep quality†. This timing gives your body the signal it needs to begin releasing its own sleep-promoting compounds.

Q:

Can I take this product if I am also taking Coumadin (warfarin)?

A:

If you are taking Coumadin (warfarin) or any other blood-thinning medication, you should consult your healthcare provider before adding any dietary supplement to your routine.

Q:

Does melatonin help with sleep in older adults?

A:

As people age, natural melatonin production may decline, which can affect sleep patterns. Some studies suggest that melatonin supplementation may help older adults fall asleep more easily and support overall sleep quality and next-day alertness.† However, many of these studies were short-term, and more research is needed to fully understand long-term effects.†

Q:

I tend to keep a regular sleep schedule during the week and then stay up late on weekends. Would Melatonin help me get to sleep at my normal time on Sunday evening?

A:

Changes in sleep schedule over the weekend can make it harder to fall asleep at your usual time on Sunday night. Some people use melatonin to help support a more consistent sleep-wake cycle and make it easier to transition back to a weekday schedule.† One study showed the time taken to fall asleep was reduced from almost 60 minutes to a few seconds over 20 minutes†.  As individual responses can vary, it’s a good idea to consult your healthcare provider for personalized guidance.

Q:

Does Melatonin help jet lag?

A:

In several human studies, researchers found that melatonin supplementation reduces the number of days needed to establish a normal sleep pattern†. Travelers took melatonin on the day of travel (close to the target bedtime of the destination) and for several days thereafter. Looking at several studies on the impact of melatonin and jet lag, melatonin seemed to provide benefit for about half the people†. Individual results may vary.

Q:

Will Melatonin change my dreams?

A:

Possibly. Some people report experiencing more vivid dreams when taking melatonin.† However, responses can vary, and not everyone notices a change in their dreaming.

Q:

Will Melatonin make me drowsy or “hungover” the following day, like many prescription sleep aids?

A:

Melatonin is generally well-tolerated and is not known to cause the “hangover” effect that can occur with some prescription sleep medications.† However, because melatonin may cause drowsiness, it should only be taken when you’re able to get a full night’s sleep—ideally when at least 7–8 hours remain before waking.† Avoid driving or operating machinery after taking melatonin.

Q:

Is there anyone who should not take Melatonin?

A:

Melatonin is a hormone that plays a role in the body’s sleep-wake cycle, and it may not be suitable for everyone. Women who are pregnant, trying to conceive, or breastfeeding should consult their healthcare provider before using melatonin. Individuals with diabetes, low blood pressure, or those taking medications such as warfarin or other blood thinners should also speak with their physician before using melatonin.†

Q:

Are Melatonin supplements recommended for Migraines?

A:

Some early studies have looked at melatonin’s possible role in reducing the frequency of migraines, likely due to its effects on sleep and circadian rhythm.† There has been some research that taking Melatonin nightly reduces migraine incidence. But melatonin supplements are not approved for the treatment or prevention of migraines.† Individuals interested in using melatonin for this purpose should consult their healthcare provider.

Q:

What is Melatonin?

A:

Melatonin is a hormone naturally produced by the pineal gland in the brain. It helps regulate the body’s internal clock, also known as the circadian rhythm, by signaling when it’s time to sleep and wake. Melatonin levels typically rise in the evening as it gets dark and decrease in the morning with exposure to light.

Q:

Are melatonin supplements safe to take with beta-blocker medications?

A:

Some beta-blockers may lower the body’s natural melatonin production, which can contribute to sleep difficulties. If you are taking any prescription medications, including beta-blockers, you should consult your healthcare provider before using melatonin.

Q:

Is it true that melatonin is good for immune health?

A:

Melatonin is primarily known for supporting sleep, but it also has antioxidant properties that may play a role in overall wellness, including immune system function.†

Q:

A:

Cooper Complete® 5 mg Prolonged Release Melatonin Supplement is a formula with a two-phased delivery system that releases melatonin quickly and then steadily over six hours to support healthy sleep throughout the night.† This supplement may be helpful for adults who fall asleep easily but occasionally experience difficulty staying asleep.†
